Far Too Many Plants: Clematis ianthina (fusca violacea)

Brighton Plants

Brighton Plants is a small nursery in Small Dole, seven miles outside Brighton, explicitly set up to offer species and varieties that are not easily available locally (according to the RHS Plantfinder) and which may be unfamiliar to many gardeners, but which I regard as well worth growing.

Plants are especially chosen to be suitable for local conditions - on chalk, clay, by the sea or in shade.

Plants may be collected by appointment or sent to you by mail (p&p extra of course). I can accept cheque, cash or (for continental customers especially) bank transfers. Credit card payments are, I regret, not yet possible but Paypal has proved very reliable.

Plants are grown in a minimal peat mix (John Innes & Peat free compost with or without sand or grit) which I find works as well as any peat based mix, despite claims to the contrary. Use of chemicals is also kept to a minimum.

About Brighton Plants

So I said last week to Emma, looking at our garden, 'You know, I believe I'm actually finally quite a good gardener.' She looked aghast at me. She knows I live and breed plants. She knows I read everything I can find on plants, that I have a gargantuan database that started out as a little notebook wish-list of plants more than twenty-five years ago and which now has 12000 entries. She looks about at what I've created here in what is really a very modest suburban garden and she thinks I'm being laughably self-effacing. But I'm not. It's taken this long to get me to the stage where I can look about and think 'I actually feel like I know what I'm doing.' I can't tell you how satisfying that is. I've moved on average once a year since I left home including a year in Australia and several moves to university to study ecology.

But a garden needs a permanent home. It's not a good combination. So I've been through my Gargantuan Plant List and the RHS Plantfinder and noted all the things that I think are worth growing that don't seem to be available locally, or indeed at all in the UK, and I'm getting hold of the seeds and stock plants and setting up my own nursery.

In June of this year we began the move to a new site in New Hall Lane, Small Dole. Looking at the map of South-East England in The Plantfinder, it is remarkable that there are so few small specialist and independent nurseries in the Brighton area. I am looking forward to remedying that.

A small climber similar to C.fusca but with thickly textured rather than fuzzy, purplish flowers.
